March 2017

Hello Pharmacy Student Forum Members,

Can you believe in just 2 short months some of us will be one step closer and others will be receiving their Doctorate of Pharmacy degree? With this exciting time approaching, it is important to begin preparing for the next stage in your journey.

For P4 students, the Match results will be released on March 17 for Phase I and April 12 for Phase II. As you transition from student to new practitioner, make sure to check out ASHP’s resources to help you succeed in your first job as a pharmacist. I encourage you to remember all of your mentors throughout pharmacy school and pay it forward! Lastly, if you are looking for a way to begin or continue our involvement with ASHP as a new practitioner, I recommend applying to serve on a New Practitioner Forum Advisory Group. The application deadline is May 1.

For P3 students, rotation selections are in progress or happening soon! It is important to remember to select APPE rotations that will challenge and prepare you for your future career. ASHP offers an APPE rotation in national association management at their headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. I completed an APPE rotation at ASHP and highly recommend this rotation. If you are unsure of the next steps in your journey, selecting a variety of practice sites can help you discover your passion within our profession. ASHP’s list of health observances may help you develop ideas for rotation projects focused around these topics. Seeking advice from a mentor or current P4 can be very helpful in selecting your APPE rotations. If you are interested in pursuing a residency program, you can find information regarding PhORCAS and the Match on ASHP’s website. I highly suggest attending the 2017 Summer Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, on June 3–7 to network with fellow students, pharmacists, and pharmacy residents.

For P1 and P2 students, ASHP offers an exciting Summer Internship opportunity for students interested in learning more about national association management. Just like the P3 students, I highly suggest attending the 2017 Summer Meeting in Minneapolis, MN, on June 3–7 to network with fellow students, pharmacists, and pharmacy residents. Opportunities to serve on Pharmacy Student Forum Advisory Groups allow students to work with their fellow peers to provide advice and guidance to the Forum and ASHP regarding unique needs of student members. I highly encourage you to apply for a local, state, or national position with SSHP, your ASHP state affiliate chapter, or ASHP. The application deadline is May 1.

I will leave you with advice I received advice from ASHP staff while on my APPE rotation regarding finding a job I love:

  • Look at each step of your pharmacy journey as an adventure. Your path may not be straight and narrow, but you can learn something from each experience. You can use each position to help you determine your true passions within the pharmacy profession. Stay flexible.
  • Practice makes perfect. You are not supposed to know everything on your first day in a new position. Patience is important in helping you achieve success. Sometimes you will have to fail a few times before you will succeed. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave 2500 speeches before he gave his most famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
  • Continue your involvement in ASHP throughout your career. ASHP can provide you with encouragement, mentors, mentees, friends all over the country, education advancement opportunities, and so much more.
  • Strive to advance our profession in each of your positions. The ASHP Government Affairs Division says, “If you’re not on the bus, you’re under it.”

Have fun with each step in your journey!
