Idaho State University College of Pharmacy Project Summary

School Name

Idaho State University College of Pharmacy

Membership Drive

Prior to the fall semester, the student society attended the P1 orientation where we presented a poster and invited P1 students to sign up on a form to indicate interest. After new students had time to settle into pharmacy school, we held a membership drive during Health-System Pharmacy Week. For the Drive, we invited Dr. Melissa Tollinger, local clinical pharmacist, to come and speak about her experiences in clinical pharmacy. Furthermore, the Idaho Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ISHP) provided us with “ISHP” t-shirts that were awarded to actively participating students. Lastly, the SSHP President spoke briefly on the mission of ISU-SSHP and explained how to become an SSHP member. Grant funds were used to provide pizza for attendees.

Career Development

Clinical Skills Development
At the beginning of the year, we set a goal to recruit five more teams than last year to make this year’s event the largest yet for our school, pushing our campaign through e-mails, posters and classroom presentations. We achieved that goal by having a total of 18 teams, including two P1 teams. We also had six judges volunteer for the competition. The top three teams were awarded either a $25 gift certificate or a copy of ASHP’s “Get the Residency” book, prizes purchased using grant funds. The first place team received financial support from the college as well as the ISHP Foundation to help fund their trip to ASHP Midyear.

Health-Systems Speaker(s)
The student society hosted local residency director, Dr. Paul Black, and PGY2 resident, Dr. Elaine Nguyen. Dr. Black spoke to the SSHP on the future of post-graduate training and what students can expect when they move into a PGY1 position. Dr. Nguyen discussed curriculum vitae, showing a few examples of her own that scored high when she was applying for residency. Soup, salad and sandwiches were provided for attendees, purchased using grant funds. At another meeting, we hosted a member of the ISHP Board speaking on the Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative and its status among Idaho hospitals.

Residency Training

During our annual Pharmacy Fair, ISU-SSHP supported and organized a residency panel discussion as well as an information session on the “Match” process. The panel discussion was very well attended by students and directors alike; nearly all Idaho residencies were represented.

Professional Development Project

Medication Reconciliation Project
As the ISU-SSHP President saw the need to incorporate medication reconciliation in the emergency department of his hospital, the executive committee chose to pursue a project that would allow the students to have a clinical impact upon the community. A relationship with the Boise Senior Center was fostered, collaborating in the creation of a Medication List Form to fit our patients’ needs. Grant funding was used to print flyers announcing the event, as well as copies of the Medication List Form. Four students and our ASHP pharmacist mentor represented ISU-SSHP at the event. Each student met with patients and reviewed their medications in order to create a “Home Health List”. By helping these people better understand the details of their medications, hopefully we are able to help prevent some adverse drug events. In the case that the patient does have to enter the healthcare system, we have helped them prepare a complete list of conditions and medications to help inform their provider.

PPMI Project

ISU-SSHP presented a poster on PPMI in the state capitol building during “Pharmacy Day at the Capitol”.
