Optimizing Patient Safety: Guidance for the Safe Use of Parenteral Nutrition in Adult and Pediatric Patients

Concern over drug shortages remains a topic of concern nationwide. This educational activity will review strategies for ensuring safe and effective therapy for adult and pediatric patients when parenteral nutrition (PN) components are in short supply. The activity will also review current and upcoming guidelines that relate to optimizing PN therapy for adult and pediatric patients. The activity will conclude with clinical cases that illustrate best practices in PN therapy, including lipid injectable emulsion (ILE) dosing, in adult and pediatric patients.

Phil Ayers, PharmD, BCNSP, FMSHP, FASHP, is a clinical specialist in nutrition support at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi and serves the Department of Pharmacy as Chief of Clinical Pharmacy Services. Dr. Ayers also serves as Clinical Associate Professor with the School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi. He received his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Mississippi. He currently serves the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) on the Board of Directors as President-Elect and is Past Chair of the ASPEN Parenteral Nutrition Safety Committee. Phil is a member of the USP Compounding Committee and Chair of the Parenteral Nutrition Subcommittee. Dr. Ayers was awarded the ASPEN Excellence in Nutrition Support Education Award, 2011 and the ASPEN. Stanley Serlick Award for Parenteral Nutrition Safety in 2016.

Angela Bingham, PharmD, BCCCP, BCNSP, BCPS, FASHP, FASPEN, FCCM, FCCP is Acting Chair, Clinical Associate Professor, PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program Director, and Residency Programs Coordinator within the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, Saint Joseph's University. She practices as a Critical Care/Nutrition Support Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Cooper University Health Care in Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Bingham is board certified in nutrition support, critical care, and pharmacotherapy. She is a Fellow of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. Professional contributions have included: Chair, Board of Pharmacy Specialties Specialty Council on Nutrition Support Pharmacy; Chair, ASHP Council on Education and Workforce Development; Content Matter Expert, ASHP Critical Care Pharmacy Review and Recertification Program; Faculty, ACCP Teaching and Learning Academy Program; Chair, ASPEN Pharmacy Practice Section as well as task forces for adult critical care nutrition guideline revisions, parenteral nutrition appropriateness consensus recommendations, and standards of practice for nutrition support pharmacists. She is an Associate Editor for Nutrition in Clinical Practice and Assistant Editor for DiPiro's Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach.
