Student Perspectives: SSHPs and Advocacy

ASHP Director of Academic Programs, Gina Luchen, discusses with student leaders Alexsandra Nilges from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, Anita Yang from the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Jennifer Rose from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy, and Kiley Margolis from Temple University School of Pharmacy on their SSHP’s advocacy efforts and legislative action to advance the pharmacy profession.

SPEAKERS

Jennifer RoseJennifer Rose is a fourth-year student pharmacist at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy. She was born and raised in a small rural town of Grants, NM and soon to be the first of her family to graduate from college. Rose has served in multiple student leadership positions including; ASHP-SSHP Chapter President, Kappa Psi Treasurer as well as Class of 2021 Vice President. Throughout her pharmacy experiences she has become more intrigued with expanding her knowledge and intends to pursue residency post-graduation. She hopes to specialize in critical care or emergency medicine, but is looking forward to learning more and expanding her interests throughout her experiential rotations.

Anita YangAnita Yang is a fourth-year student pharmacist at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Yang has been an active student leader at her school, through participation in numerous organizations and service as an elected officer. During her second and third year of school, she had the opportunity to serve on the Executive Team of her Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists, along with active involvement and service to her ASHP State Affiliate organization. Yang currently serves as the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists Student Pharmacist Forum Chapter Chair for the four pharmacy schools within North Carolina.

Aleksandra NilgesAlexsandra Nilges is a fourth-year student pharmacist at the University of Kentucky College Of Pharmacy (UKCOP). In addition to her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree, Nilges is pursuing a Master’s in Business Administration. During her time at UKCOP, Nilges has been active in pharmacy professional organizations and served as a student leader. Nilges had the honor of serving as Class President for her cohort and has also worked as an inpatient pharmacy intern. Nilges is looking forward to pursuing a pharmacy residency in health system pharmacy administration post graduation.

Kylie MargolisKiley Margolis is a PY4 pharmacy student at Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, PA. She has served on her chapter's Policy and Legislation Advocacy workgroup the last 2 years and when she is not on her APPE rotations or studying for the NAPLEX she enjoys reading and discussing proposed legislation pertaining to the pharmacy field.

Gina LuchenGina Luchen, Pharm.D. serves as the Director of Academic Programs at ASHP. In this role, Dr. Luchen leads the development and implementation of programs and initiatives related to student pharmacists, schools and colleges of pharmacy, and pharmacy educators. She serves as staff liaison to the Pharmacy Student Forum and Section of Pharmacy Educators. Prior to this role, Dr. Luchen served as an ASHP Executive Fellow in Association Leadership and Management at ASHP. She received her Bachelor’s in Pharmaceutical Studies and Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. Following her studies, she completed a PGY1 Community-Based Residency at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in conjunction with Balls Food Stores in Olathe, KS.
