Join us as we sit down with Chadi Abbas and Rafael Roman as they share with ASHP how they have adapted their pharmacy technician roles to provide quality patient care and maintain a well trained workforce during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Rafael Roman, BA, CPhT is a Pharmacy Technician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Canter Center in New York, New York. Mr. Roman earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the City University of New York: City College and is a Certified Pharmacy Technician. He works as a member of the Training and Education team to provide pharmacy onboarding and training for new pharmacists and pharmacy technicians at his institution. Mr. Roman has had extensive experience working for other major hospitals systems such as New York- Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and major retail pharmacies such as Walgreen’s and Eckerd (now Rite Aid).
Chadi Abbas is a Pharmacy Technician Trainer/Recruiter for Department of Pharmacy at Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor. He is a Senior Pharmacy Technician, and enjoys using his skills to train new pharmacy technicians. He graduated with an M.D. degree from Romania in 1998 and worked as General Physician for two years in Lebanon before moving to the United States. He took a Pharmacy Technician position at Michigan Medicine in 2004 and was promoted to his current role in February 2011. He obsessed with health care all things pharmacy related. He served as Director-at-Large at ASHP Pharmacy Technician Forum Executive committee in 2019 and locally serves as a Board member of Michigan Society of Pharmacy Technician. He enjoys watching movies, fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Vicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.
Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.
Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.
