Medication excipients (often-referred to as inactive ingredients) provide several functions, such as serving as binders, disintegrants, solubilizers, preservatives, and/or assisting with pH adjustment. However, medication excipients may cause adverse events or allergic reactions in some patients. Several regulatory and technological gaps exist that hinder practitioners from preventing adverse events and allergic reactions related to these excipients.
This podcast is intended to bring awareness to current regulatory and technological gaps associated with managing medication excipient allergies and intolerances, highlight common operational challenges involved with identifying and preventing medication excipient allergic reactions, and provide current “best practices” to address these issues.
SPEAKERS
Rosemary Duncan, PharmD, BCPA, is a medication safety officer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is also the residency program director for the PGY2 Medication-Use Safety and Policy residency program. Her work involves investigating medication-related events and helping develop system changes that promote the safe use of medications within the hospital and health-system. She is the immediate past chair of the Maryland Society of Health System Pharmacy (MSHP) Medication Safety Subcommittee and an active member of the ASHP Medication Safety Section Advisory Group.
Rita K. Jew, PharmD, MBA, BCPPS, FASHP, is Vice President of Operations at the Institute for Safe Medication Practice (ISMP). Prior to ISMP, Dr. Jew had her own consulting business where she provided pharmacy consultative services, conducted leadership training programs and advised technology startup companies. She has also held various leadership positions at children’s hospitals and health-system pharmacy. Her 25 plus-year tenure in hospital pharmacies encompassed broad experiences in pharmacy leadership, clinical pharmacy services, and more.
Katayoon Kathy Ghomeshi, PharmD, MBA, BCPS, CPPS, is a Medication Safety Officer at UCSF Health and Assistant Clinical Professor with UCSF School of Pharmacy. She is past Chair of the ASHP SICP Advisory Group on Medication Safety. She serves on the Board of Directors for the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists. She is an appointed member of the California Hospital Association Medication Safety Committee and of the Specialty Council member for the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.
