In this podcast, Michelle Carrasquillo and Maria Carias will discuss Michelle’s journey as a pharmacist of Latin heritage. Michelle gives listeners a glimpse into her upbringing as a Puerto Rican American and dives deep into why cultural competence is especially important for healthcare providers who care for racially diverse populations.

Michelle Carrasquillo, PharmD, MS, is the Clinical Pharmacy Manager at St Joseph’s Hospital North in Lutz, FL, which is a part of the BayCare Health System in Tampa Bay. In this role, she oversees pharmacy operations and clinical pharmacy practice for acute care and the on site outpatient infusion center. Michelle received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a minor in French at the University of North Florida followed by her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. After graduation, she went on to complete a combined PGY1/PGY2/MS Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency at the University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC. She currently serves as a member of ASHP’s New and Emerging Leaders Section Advisory Group.
Maria F. Carias, M.B.A., M.S., is the Director of Member Operations within the ASHP Office of Member Relations. In this role, Ms. Carias coordinates the operational logistics for various ASHP initiatives. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Policy from American University and both her Master’s of Science in Project Management and Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Ms. Carias was recognized as a 2020 recipient of the ASHP CEO Award for Staff Excellence.
