Mending Broken Hearts - The Role of the Pharmacist in Caring for Adults and Children with Congenital Heart Disease

February 7-14 is the Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) Awareness Week. Join members of ASHP’s Pediatric Section Advisory Group as they discuss CHD, the care of children and adults with CHD, the role of pharmacists in the care of patients with CHD, and general clinical pearls for caring for these patients.

SPEAKERS

Vicki BasalygaVicki Basalyga, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPPS, is the Director for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. In this role Vicki serves as an information resource and provides guidance to ASHP members regarding science and scientific developments affecting pharmacy practice in health systems. She serves as secretary to the Section executive committee and coordinates activities to accomplish the objectives established by the Section. Additionally, Vicki has assumed the position of Council Secretary for the ASHP's Council on Therapeutics.

Vicki received her Doctor of Pharmacy from Duquesne University and completed an ASHP accredited PGY1 at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Vicki is also a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

Prior to her current position at ASHP, Vicki practiced as critical care pharmacist in both the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Other activities Vicki performed included drafting policies and procedures, co-chairing the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, creating and drafting order sets for CPOE conversion and precepting residents and students.

Amy KiskaddonDr. Amy Kiskaddon received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from The University of Florida College of Pharmacy in 2015. Following graduation, she completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida and a PGY2 pediatric pharmacy residency at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. Dr. Kiskaddon joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in 2017 as a Pediatric CVICU/Cardiac Transplant Clinical Pharmacist. Her interests include cardiology, transplant, critical care, anticoagulation and clinical research.

Pete JohnsonDr. Pete Johnson is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice and President’s Associate Presidential Professor at the OU College of Pharmacy and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at the OU College of Medicine. Over the last 15 years, Dr. Johnson has practiced in both the CVICU and PICU at Oklahoma Children's Hospital at OU Health. Currently, he spends most of his clinical time in the CVICU where he is involved in interprofessional education and research in the CVICU/PICU.
