A Compassionate Approach to Acute Opioid Withdrawal

Harms from opioid misuse continue despite significant attention to this public health crisis. Symptoms of acute opioid withdrawal are incredibly disabling and a leading driver in returning to use. Numerous methods exist to palliate withdrawal symptoms and improve the likelihood a patient who uses opioids may achieve long term recovery.

SPEAKERS

Jeeny KoehlJenny Koehl, PharmD, BCPS is an emergency medicine clinical pharmacist and coordinator of the postgraduate year 2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. After earning her PharmD degree at UCSF (2015), she returned to Wisconsin to complete her PGY-1 and PGY-2 Emergency Medicine pharmacy residencies (2015-2017) at the University of Wisconsin Health. Following residency, she moved to Boston to join the incredible EM team at MGH. Her passions include advancing pharmacy resident education and research training, mentorship, national committee involvement, and global health. Her clinical practice interests include neurology and cardiology.

Chris HerndonChris Herndon, PharmD, BCACP, FASHP, FCCP, is a professor with the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) School of Pharmacy. Currently, Dr. Herndon sees chronic pain and opioid use disorder patients within a family medicine residency clinic. Dr. Herndon’s scholarship interest focuses primarily on pain and palliative care education and he is the Principal Investigator for the National Institutes of Health Center of Excellence in Pain Education at SIUE. Dr. Herndon is the 2019 president for the Society of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacists.

Jessica NesheimJessica Nesheim, PharmD, BCPS, is an emergency medicine clinical pharmacy specialist and emergency medicine PGY2 residency program director at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. Jessica serves on interdisciplinary commmittees locally and nationally for emergency medicine and opioid stewardship. She is an active member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA), ACCP Emergency Medicine PRN and ASHP Emergency Medicine Section Advisory Group (SAG) and is an adjunct assistant professor at Drake University.
