Are You Sleeping? Palliative Sedation for Relief of Refractory Symptoms in Terminally Ill Patients

Responding to the opioid epidemic is a key priority for health systems, with leaders engaging at multiple levels to address community and individual patient care needs. This activity will provide practical tools for starting and maturing an opioid stewardship program in health systems. A focus on adapting the approach for various care settings, such as ambulatory, inpatient, and multi-hospital, will be compared and contrasted.

  • Describe legal, ethical, and professional considerations for pharmacists.
  • Describe a pharmacologic regimen for palliative sedation.
  • List strategies to support professionals through loss and grief in the course of providing patient care.
