What is the ASHP Executive Fellowship in Association Leadership and Management?
The fellowship is a 12-month paid program designed to develop future association executives. The fellow(s) will be immersed in all aspects of not-for-profit management, working closely with ASHP senior leadership and staff in all areas of the organization. In addition to learning about association management, fellow(s) develop their leadership and communication skills, problem solving techniques, and professional growth.
Is the fellowship equivalent to an ASHP accredited pharmacy residency?
The fellowship focuses on refining leadership abilities and executive skills across a not-for-profit association. For this reason, it differs from PGY1 or PGY2 pharmacy residency training, which primarily focuses on direct patient care.
How is the fellowship structured?
Throughout the year, fellow(s) are provided the opportunity to work on a variety of short-term and longitudinal projects in all areas of the association. Experiences are customized to the interests of the fellow(s) and are designed to meet the fellowship Learning Objectives. This structure differs from the monthly rotations of a typical PGY1 or PGY2 residency program.
Where is the fellowship located?
The fellowship is housed in the heart of our nation’s capital at the ASHP Joseph A. Oddis Global Headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland.
Does ASHP sponsor work visas?
ASHP does not sponsor work visas for this position.
Is there a stipend associated with the fellowship?
Fellows receive a $56,000 stipend for the 12-month duration of the program. Additionally, fellows are eligible for ASHP employee benefits including: medical, prescription drug, vision, and dental coverage, paid vacation, sick and holiday leave, as well as life and disability insurance.
Is completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency program required to apply for this fellowship?
Completion of an ASHP-accredited residency is preferred, but not required. Candidates must have graduated from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.
Do I need to be licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Maryland to complete this fellowship?
Maryland licensure is not required. To be considered for the fellowship, candidates must be eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in any U.S. state or territory.
Do I have to sign up for PhORCAS to apply for the fellowship?
The program does not use PhORCAS for the application process. Please use the ASHP application portal to submit your complete application.
What if I am enrolled in the Residency Match process and also interested in the Fellowship program?
If you are selected for the fellowship, you will be notified before the deadline to submit a Match ranking.
When are fellowship applications due and when will I be notified regarding my application status?
Applications are due in early January; please visit the Application and Program Details webpage for a list of required materials and specific deadlines. Applicants selected for an interview will be notified within 2-4 weeks following the application deadline. All applicants will be notified of the final decision within 4-6 weeks.
How do I submit my pharmacy school transcripts?
ASHP accepts both official and unofficial transcripts for the executive fellowship application. Official and unofficial transcripts must show the completion of all PharmD requirements from an ACPE accredited school or college of pharmacy.

When is the expected fellowship start date?
The fellowship typically begins in early to mid-July, and continues for a full 12 months. A specific start date will be identified upon acceptance of the offer by the program leadership and candidate(s).
Are there travel requirements as part of the fellowship?
The fellow(s) attend several local and national ASHP events throughout the year such as the Midyear Clinical Meeting and other meetings as part of the educational experience. ASHP financially supports the travel as part of the program.
What positions does this fellowship prepare me for?
The fellowship has a 50-year history of preparing individuals to assume a wide-variety of association leadership roles. Graduates of the program have gone on to serve in leadership roles in associations, government, for-profit corporations, academia, philanthropy, pharmacy practice, and various other sectors.
