ASHP’s National Public Awareness Campaign to Spotlight You, Your Stories, and the Full Impact of Hospital and Health-System Pharmacy

Dear Colleagues,

Earlier today, at the opening general session of the 58th ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition, I had the opportunity to share a sneak peek of our upcoming national awareness campaign, which will launch in the spring of 2024. You can watch the video here.

This sneak peek video is the first step of an incredible, multi-year national public awareness campaign spotlighting the vital patient care roles that all of you play as hospital and health-system pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. We announced this campaign in June, immediately after the ASHP Board of Directors approved an initial $3 million commitment to this multi-year effort.

The video you just watched shows only one story, with one pharmacist, but the message is enormous: the time has come to shine a bright light on the exceptional contributions all of you make as pharmacy professionals working in all hospital and health-system settings—from the bedside to the clinic and physician office, in the community pharmacy, and the home. The care that you provide is essential and spans the full spectrum of patient care.

Through our campaign, we will show the public, including your patients and their caregivers, the positive difference that the pharmacist/patient relationship makes in their lives. This essential relationship you have with your patients makes their care safer and more effective, and ASHP is going to help you tell your story.

The public will hear the voices of physicians, nurses, hospital administrators, and other healthcare professionals expressing their views on how every day, you, as hospital and health-system pharmacists and technicians, make medication therapy optimal, safe, effective, and accessible for the patients you serve.

We will show the full range of specialties – from cardiology to oncology to endocrinology to pediatrics to infectious diseases, emergency medicine, critical care, psychiatric, older adult, solid-organ transplantation, pharmacotherapy, and primary care.

And, we will show our inpatient, compounding, ambulatory, informatics, and specialty pharmacy practitioners, and all others who manage and ensure effective, accessible, and safe medication therapy. As you can see, we’ll try not to leave anyone out.

The campaign will spotlight the true depth and breadth of pharmacy practice in hospitals and health systems and its positive impact on patient care each and every day.

And most importantly, it will be you, our members, telling your stories through dynamic videos and the written word. We will do this via an expansive advertising campaign, across social media, in national headlines, and on a dedicated website. Through it all, your stories will shine bright. This campaign is for you, and about you, and ultimately so that the public understands your value and insists that you are included in their care. We also hope that this national campaign will inspire more students to become hospital and health-system pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

A successful campaign to create public awareness and engage members and other healthcare professionals requires significant and sustained investment. ASHP has stepped up, as I mentioned earlier, with $3 million in initial funding, and the ASHP Foundation is dedicated to raising additional dollars to amplify our message and extend the duration and impact of the campaign.

As we embark on this exciting initiative, we want to hear from you. Visit this special website so you can share your story and help ensure this important campaign fully and authentically reflects our impact across the healthcare landscape. We can’t wait to share more details with you in early 2024 as we roll out this major new national public awareness campaign!

Health-system pharmacy’s time has come. And that’s thanks to all of you!

Sincerely,

Paul
