Chair Message January 2018

January 2018

Happy New Year! It is my hope that all of you had a fabulous holiday season with your family and friends and that you did find time for rest and relaxation! The Midyear Clinical meeting is now a memory but for those of you that attended, hoping it was full of educational, valuable memories and that you had some fun in the process! I enjoyed getting to see so many of you at the meeting and make some new friends.

At the Midyear meeting our section recognizes members with significant contributions via the Distinguished Service Award. This past year this prestigious award went to Joel C. Marrs, Pharm.D., ASH-CHC, BCACP, BCPS-AQ Cardiology, CLS, FASHP, FCCP, FNLA. I have had the honor of working with Joel for quite some time on various section committees, have heard him speak and is to be commended for all his work for ASHP and our section - thank you! Congratulations Dr. Marrs and we are very proud of you! If you know someone who is deserving of this award, the nominations period opens in later this month and closes April 1st - you can nominate them here: ASHP Distinguished Service Award

Additionally at Midyear, our section advisory groups (SAGs) had many valuable sessions and the executive committee had a representative at each one. It was very beneficial to see the work of all these SAGs and to meet the many faces that make our section run smoothly! The SAGs are quite busy launching/updating resource centers, developing webinars/podcasts, and tweeting – click on these two links to follow the SAGs on Emergency Care and Emerging Sciences. Thank you to all the SAG chairs, vice chairs and members for all you do for our section! Watch for future ways that YOU can be involved in one of our SAGs.

Other ways to be involved with ASHP include submitting an educational proposal for the 2018 Midyear Clinical Meeting (already?!) or the National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference. Would you like to provide input into formation of ASHP policy? The 2018 Call for Resolutions is open and the deadline is March 5, 2018. This online submission of resolutions is a way for members like you to have input to the 2018 House of Delegates meeting in June. The resolutions must be sponsored by two ASHP active members but they do not have to be delegates. On June 3, 2018, I look forward to sitting in the House of Delegates representing our Section. You can read about the proposed polices on the House of Delegates Connect Site.

On closing, as we embark into a New Year, we are getting “started” – with a new position, new patients, new students, or new challenges – but we also want to try to stay ahead (or just keep up!) so here is a quote I read from Mark Twain that I thought timely this time of year:

“The secret to getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking down complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks and then starting on the first one.”

This concept seems to work well for me - at the hospital, school, home, and even in running! Good luck on starting whatever lies ahead for you in this New Year. We hope that ASHP will be right beside you in your daily patient care.

As always, let us know how we can better serve you at sections@ashp.org. Make it a great day!
