Chair Message January 2019

January 2019

Happy New Year!! I hope you all had a great holiday season and that 2019 is treating you well, so far!

It’s hard to believe that a month ago, many of us were in Anaheim, California for the Midyear Clinical Meeting. If you attended, I hope your meeting was a success full of educational sessions, networking, residency showcases, PPS interviews, fun, and more!

One of the traditions at the Midyear Clinical Meeting is to recognize a member of the Section for their continued dedication and service to our Section.  This high honor, the Distinguished Service Award, recognizes members of Sections and Forums who have significantly contributed to the advancement of the pharmacy profession and supported their Section. Our Section’s 2018 awardee was Chris Betz Pharm.D., BCPS, FASHP, FKSHP. Chris is a Professor in the Department of Clinical and Administrative Sciences at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy in Louisville, Kentucky and has served in a number of ways at the state and national levels. Congratulations, Chris! If you would like to nominate a deserving individual, the nomination period will open on February 1st with a deadline of April 1st.

The Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists was very busy at Midyear with many events and sessions. The Section coordinated many educational sessions; there was something for everyone! In addition to CE offerings, there were a number of sessions that provided BPS-approved, recertification credit hours for the many Board Certification specialties. Did you attend the Midyear and miss a presentation? If you were unable to attend a live sessions at Midyear, you’re in luck! ASHP is making the presentations available online in February 2019.

In addition to all of that, the Section coordinated 16 networking sessions, with some incorporating poster sessions. Did you miss some of the networking sessions? If so, the Network Facilitators will be posting summaries of each session on ASHP Connect. Please refer to the postings for the topics discussed and hear what colleagues had to say about each one. This is a great way to get practical information for hot topics within each specialty area.

The Section Executive Committee reviews the Networking Session offerings every year and we want to hear from you! Please be on the lookout for an email containing a survey to give feedback on the Networking Sessions. We are looking for suggestions on how to improve the sessions to reach more members and to offer a useful experience in order to allow for information to be taken back to institutions to improve patient care. Please review the current list of Networking Sessions. Are there other specialties you think should be represented (for example:  Population Health or Equity & Diversity)? Again, we value your feedback and we want to hear from you! Take the Survey here: Section of Clinical Specialists Networking Sessions Survey.

Finally, if you haven’t had the chance to register yet the Section Advisory Group on Emerging Sciences is presenting a “Biomarkers 101” Webinar on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EST.  The webinar will provide an introduction to the use of biomarkers in a clinical pharmacist’s practice and how biomarkers can be utilized and evaluated in practice.  Sign up for it here: Biomarkers 101 Webinar

Finally, I am sure most have you have heard that BPS issued a call for a petition for Emergency Medicine.   I wanted to let you know that ASHP and ACCP are currently working together through 2019 on a petition to submit to BPS for Emergency Medicine be considered as a new BPS specialty.

Please let us know if you have questions or feedback on how the Section can help support your needs at [email protected].

Have a great, safe day!
