Chair Message July 2018

July 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Refreshed and renewed. Those are the feelings that I felt earlier this summer as I sat down with eight pharmacists I had just met at the Harvey A.K. Whitney Award Lecture dinner. At the ASHP Summer Meetings, I had connected with old friends and made new ones. I had the opportunity to leave budgets, committees, auditors and other stressors behind as I spoke with fellow pharmacists about what we want the future of pharmacy look like. That night the dinner conversation ranged from pharmacy to tractors to logging shows on TV. I went home with renewed energy and ideas. A few weeks later, my 18-year-old son and I went on a mission trip to Haiti. Put in charge of entertaining 20 fourth graders that spoke only Creole, we bonded over science experiments involving vinegar, baking soda, and exploding tea bottles that shot fifty feet in the air. I returned ready to tackle old and new challenges.

As pharmacists, residents, students, and pharmacy techicians, we have tough and stressful positions. Our decisions and actions directly or indirectly affect the lives and well-being of patients every day. How we react to these stressors affects our ability to provide the care patients deserve. Resilience is the capacity to quickly recover from these stressful situations. ASHP members and leaders have recognized that workplace burnout and school stressors are negatively affecting the lives of its members and have encouraged ASHP staff and volunteer leaders to look at ways to improve resilience. Over the course of the next year, hopefully you will be able to participate on one of the ASHP activities that will focus on tools to strengthen your resilience. Start by checking out the new ASHP Well-Being and Resilience webpage and joining the conversation on Connect . If you have ideas, feel free to share them at [email protected].

Being able to serve as your Chair of the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners along with our awesome executive committee members Linda Spooner, Paul Milligan, Susan Skledar and two yet-to-be-named members, is an exciting opportunity. We have worked hard over the past months to make sure our strategic plan is aligned with the new ASHP goals. The SAGs and ESC will be soon meeting and starting a new year of creating new opportunities to share the best practices that make the SICP the “In” Section!

Speaking of the two yet to be named executive committee members, its time to use your vote. You can vote online right now until midnight on July 26 . You should have received your election validation number and your ASHP member ID via an email sent around June 26. It’s fast and easy to vote.

After voting, remember to look at opportunities to refresh and renew yourself! Listening to Rebecca Finley’s Whitney Award Lecture, it was the relationships that she developed over her career that helped keep her renewed and refreshed. I hope that each of you have found your relationships with fellow pharmacists to be as rewarding!
