Chair Message September 2017

September 2017

Dear Colleagues,

As we approach the fall season, I start looking forward to cooler running weather, apple and pumpkin picking, and spectacular fall foliage! Additionally, we start turning our thoughts toward exciting upcoming events, including ASHP’s Policy Week in late September and the Midyear Clinical Meeting in early December.

I wanted to express my excitement regarding the two newly elected SICP Executive Committee members. Congratulations to Chair-elect, Todd D. Lemke, Pharm.D., CDE, Director of Pharmacy Services and Clinical Pharmacist for CentraCare Health–Paynesville in Paynesville, Minnesota. He served as Chair of the Section Advisory Group (SAG) on Small and Rural Hospitals and served on the ASHP Foundation Insulin Use Safety Expert Panel. Also, congratulations to newly elected Director-at-Large, Susan J. Skledar, B.S.Pharm., M.P.H., FASHP, Director of Experiential Learning and Continuing Professional Development, and Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. She served as Chair of the Section Educational Steering Committee (ESC) and has served on the ASHP Task Force on Organizational Structure. I look forward to working with Todd and Susan this year!

Last month, we kicked off the new year with our annual SAG/ESC member orientation session. These groups have many exciting projects they will begin working on this month and over the upcoming year. Thanks so much to the SAG/ESC members for actively participating in these activities that help to provide support to frontline pharmacists and clinical generalists to optimize patient outcomes and patient and medication safety. I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing about the novel ideas and activities generated out of each group.

Another exciting upcoming milestone is the year-long celebration of ASHP’s 75th Anniversary. The theme of the celebration is “Celebrating the Past, Creating the Future”. ASHP has served as a leader in our profession in so many ways, permitting us to improve patient care through provision of resources and connections to other pharmacists who provide quality care. ASHP looks to the future with the vision of optimizing medication use in all practice settings, to permit safe and effective medication use by everyone all of the time. Every member of our Section is dedicated to this vision through their daily work on the front lines of patient care. This future vision includes my participation as Section representative in ASHP Policy Week in Bethesda, Maryland, September 25-28. Policy Week kicks off to the Society's policy making process and is the foundation of ASHP's advocacy efforts. Members of ASHP's five policy-recommending councils and the Commission on Affiliate Relations deliberate the profession's most pressing issues. The results of these deliberations are reviewed by the Board of Directors and then approved by the House of Delegates during its session at the Summer Meeting in June. Legislative Day, when ASHP members meet with members of Congress and their staffs to discuss the roles pharmacists play in patient care, is an important Policy Week activity. I am looking forward to attending Policy Week for my very first time; I will relay my thoughts and experiences to everyone as I experience them with fresh eyes.As always, please feel free to contact me at any time with any thoughts, input, or questions at linda.spooner@mcphs.edu. I look forward to continuing to work with you all! Have a wonderful start to your fall season!

Sincerely,

Linda
