SICP Chair Message November 2019

November 2019

SICP Friends,

The 2019 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting (MCM) is just around the corner! It always feels like MCM sneaks up on us and usually gives pharmacy residents consternation as they realize their year is already half over. December is certainly busy for most of us and MCM seems to be the launching pad for this hectic time. Whether you are attending Midyear or not, this is also an opportunity for a personal pharmacy reflection: what is going on with my pharmacy passion?  I hope that we all have this professional passion or certain aspects of the profession about which we are passionate - the thing(s) that gives us motivation, satisfaction, and reassures our love of the profession. Your pharmacy passion can be many things: precepting, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient interaction and outcomes, medication safety, or mentoring. This list is endless. As with most things in life, we sometimes need a reboot and a recharge.  December and MCM are perfect times to recharge your pharmacy passion!

Is your pharmacy passion mentoring?  Reach out to a mentee from the past and check in, engage with a student or resident who may be looking for a mentor, contact one of your past or current mentors to check in and thank them for what they have done for you, or buy your resident or student a cup of coffee and chat.

Is your pharmacy passion precepting? Mix things up with your IPPE or APPE student or resident with a new challenge, do an impromptu journal club on a topic from rounds, or introduce your learner to a classic study that changed pharmacy practice.

Is your pharmacy passion technician engagement? Challenge your technicians with a new responsibility that gives them more job satisfaction, and give them a genuine thank you for all that they do.

Is your pharmacy passion relationships with peers? Reconnect with someone that you haven’t spoken with for a while, set up a coffee meeting with a colleague from your past at MCM, give a busy co-worker a thank you note or supportive email/text message, or make a goal of meeting five new people at the MCM.

Is your pharmacy passion medication safety?  Acknowledge and thank pharmacy or nursing staff who are superstars at reporting safety events in your organization, send out a Medication Safety Pearl to staff on something that happened recently, or have a contest to see who can report the most safety events in a week.

Is your pharmacy passion your ASHP state affiliate?  Attend an ASHP state affiliated meeting and reconnect.  Consider running for an office or joining a committee, or submit a presentation for the next meeting.

Is your pharmacy passion resilience? Focus on yourself and life balance, eat extra healthy for a week (no Halloween candy!), take walks at lunch for a week, take a step back and try to keep the stress at work in perspective, or declutter your office!

MCM is the midpoint of the year and a great opportunity for all of us to re-energize our pharmacy passions and role model to our pharmacy learners (and each other) why we come to work each day. I plan on reconnecting and thanking a past mentor and showing appreciation for our pharmacy technicians. I would love to hear from you and share your ideas in my January message.  Drop me a line!  ([email protected]).

If you are attending MCM, it would be great to meet you in person! Mark your calendars for the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioner Meet and Greet on Sunday, Dec 8th from 5:30-6:30 at Eyecandy Sound Lounge in Mandalay Bay. Everyone is welcome to this informal, self-treat event, so bring your business cards and say hi! Hope to see you there.
