How and Why I Became Interested in Being Appointed to the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee

My interest in getting involved with ASHP began after joining my SSHP chapter at Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. After participating in ASHP programs such as the CV Review Program I began to realize the resources this organization provided in helping shape the future of student pharmacists. I wanted to be more involved and decided to take on the President-elect position for the FAMU-SSHP chapter. While serving as President-elect under an amazing president we were able to host several inter-professional events and for the first time in a while we held a Residency Showcase that included residents and fellows from different fields of pharmacy. These events helped in driving the interest and participation of student pharmacists on our campus. My passion for this organization continued to drive me and after several conversations with my current mentor it was suggested that I apply for a national position within ASHP. I believe I applied for the advisory groups, councils, and committees as I desired to strengthen my leadership skills and be more involved in any way that I could. I was fortunate and honored to be granted an opportunity to serve as the Vice Chair for the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee (PSFEC). With this positon, I will be able to share my passion for this organization not only at the local level but also with students throughout the nation. I believe that with my involvement with PSFEC, we will continue to provide the resources needed to help myself and student pharmacists navigate their path towards a successful future and to ensure the advancement of the pharmacy profession.

How Being a Member of ASHP Has Assisted in My Personal and Professional Development

Being a member of ASHP has been extremely beneficial due to the endless resources provided by this organization. Through participation in the CV editing program I had the opportunity to have my CV reviewed by two pharmacists who both provided thorough and prompt feedback. As a member, I have been able to advance in my leadership skills and become more knowledgeable of health-system pharmacy through free webinars provided by ASHP. The monthly AJHP journal has kept me updated on the current trends and practices within the field of pharmacy. With forums such as the Pharmacy Student Forum, I have access to a communication platform where I can share ideas and discuss various topics with students from across the nation. The annual meetings and conferences provided by ASHP has provided me with the information needed to prepare for future residencies and fellowships. All in all, being a member of ASHP has been a rewarding experience for me and has provided the building blocks needed to enhance my skills as I prepare to become a proficient, well-rounded clinical pharmacist.

Goals for the Year as a PSFEC Member

  • Increase student-member involvement both at chapter, state, and national level
  • Provide resources for students to learn about current health-system trends such as the change in the reimbursement model from fee for service to pay for performance.
  • Provide resources for students to advocate for the profession as far as provider status.
  • Create activities/events to promote inter-professionalism.
  • Provide additional leadership opportunities for students to become more involved with ASHP
