Reasons for selecting this career path

Throughout my time at Purdue University College of Pharmacy, I always knew that I wanted to complete residency training, specifically training in the pediatric population. I was fortunate to have amazing mentors who encouraged me to take on meaningful leadership positions as a student pharmacist. Through these experiences, I began to realize that I had a passion for administration and leadership in addition to my interest in the pediatric population. These interests led me to complete a Health-System Pharmacy Administration (HSPA) Residency Program in The Houston Program at Texas Children’s Hospital.  Through residency training, I was able to gain experience in pediatrics, both clinically and operationally. I also completed a Master of Science in Pharmacy Leadership and Administration at University of Houston College of Pharmacy. My time in Houston really brought out my interest in using my administration and leadership skills to teach the future generation of pharmacists. I was able to spend time during my PGY2 year in the academia setting and knew that my passion was in this area.  Practicing the skills and training I learned in residency in the academia setting is truly a dream. I currently serve as the Course Coordinator for the Institutional Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (I-IPPE).  Additionally, my responsibilities include teaching Drug Information, Applied Pharmacy Management, Clinical Skills, and Hospital Pharmacy.

Interest in the NPF Executive Committee

I served on the New Practitioners Forum Career Development Advisory Group (CDAG) as a member and a work group lead and most recently served as the Chair for the Membership and Outreach Advisory Group (MOAG). I have been fortunate to meet and collaborate with so many great pharmacists throughout the nation. I have enjoyed every moment that I have been involved and really want to be able to continue giving back. The mentorship by the previous New Practitioners Forum Executive Committee members provided to me has been instrumental in my professional growth. I also love being able to share my experiences of volunteer involvement with ASHP New Practitioners Forum (NPF) and promote the resources to my students. I am honored and excited to serve on the Executive Committee to aid in providing direction to the amazing work that the Advisory Groups produce each year.

Benefits of being involved in ASHP as a New Practitioner

Networking, networking, networking! This has been the most rewarding benefit of being involved in the ASHP NPF. It is exciting to meet so many new practitioners and to come together to share our talents, strengths, and ideas. The projects that are created as a result of the ASHP NPF help advance the way ASHP can serve the future of new practitioners.

Fun Fact

My husband and I went to Rome for our honeymoon and got to meet Pope Francis. We had our marriage blessed by him!
