Reasons for selecting pharmacy:

While obtaining my master’s degree at Rutgers University I took a course on pharmacotherapeutics. This was my first introduction to learning anything pharmacy related, as I didn’t know much about pharmacy as a career before, but I really enjoyed the content that was taught. After doing some research, talking to professors from the course, and to friends in pharmacy school, I realized that pharmacy was another way that I can help my community, build trusting relationships with patients, and help individuals to have better health outcomes.

Professional Interests:

  • Ambulatory Care
  • Women’s Health
  • Outpatient Transplant Pharmacy
  • Academia

Interest in the PSF Executive Committee:

My interest in being a part of the PSF executive committee stemmed from wanting to be more involved with ASHP as a pharmacy student. I am currently the President of Howard’s SSHP chapter, but I was curious about what it would be like to participate on a national level. I am looking forward to expanding my network to connecting with other pharmacy students and pharmacists through this committee!

How being a member of ASHP has assisted in my personal and professional development:

Being a member has really opened doors to wonderful opportunities. This past year I participated in the Mentorship Program, and I truly had a wonderful experience with my mentor, Dr. Katrina White, PharmD, BCACP. I was able to practice and fine-tune my interviewing skills, review important elements for writing letters of intent, and discuss my own personal career goals all while building a relationship. I felt like I got matched with the perfect mentor! I know that if I ever have questions, need advice or guidance, I can reach out to Dr. White for support and that is truly invaluable.

Goals for the year as a PSFEC Member:

  • Bridge any gaps between ASHP and pharmacy students through information and resources regarding residency, leadership, student chapters, or any other concerns.
  • Enhance pharmacy students’ membership experience.
  • Increase participation and involvement of minority students, especially those attending HBCUs, in ASHP events.

Fun Fact:

I love to travel and learn new languages. The second language I learned was German at the age of nine (although I do not remember a lot of it), and I’m fluent in Spanish. I come from a family of travelers, being that my father’s family is from Trinidad, and my mother practiced law internationally. I’ve found that traveling and speaking different languages allows to you actively participate in different cultures and connect with different people, which is something I find special. I hope to next learn American Sign Language to be able to incorporate the deaf community into my future subset of patients.
