Natalie Carleton
Dr. Carleton received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also board certified in pharmacotherapy. She resides in Wisconsin and worked as an inpatient pharmacist for several years before transitioning into management and assuming expanded leadership roles, ranging from a single hospital to system level responsibilities.
Facility:
Dr. Carleton currently is employed by Ascension in the Wisconsin market. Dr. Carleton’s role in Ascension is part of the largest catholic healthcare system and a large presence in WI. Her role interfaces with pharmacy leadership over all of Ascension as well as Wisconsin leadership. She really enjoys the creativity it takes to oversee services from critical access to larger tertiary sites. The uniqueness of her role is having the resources of a large system and collaborating with people all over the country!
Current Responsibilities:
Dr. Carleton is the manager of drug utilization and clinical services for 10 acute care sites and hospital-based clinics. She currently precepts Ascension Wisconsin PGY1 pharmacy residents and the clinical management rotation of the PYG2 administration resident.
Recent Significant Projects:
Dr. Carleton has had the privilege of unifying many P&T committees into one for Wisconsin. Along with chairing this committee, she has grown the medication safety and antimicrobial stewardship teams to have statewide oversight. Process improvement is her passion as well as delivering value-based care.
Advice for Someone New to a Specialty Area:
My advice for anyone wanting to grow into leadership is to lead by example and create opportunities in your current role that promote growth. Get creative in your solutions, never settle, and show your value.
Involvement with ASHP:
I am involved with ASHP by serving as a member on the Educational Steering Committee within the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners.
Reason for ASHP involvement:
I became interested in ASHP after attending the Midyear Clinical Meeting as a young professional. The energy and collaboration I witnessed was one of a kind. I knew I needed this organization and the community of fellow pharmacists to keep advancing in my career.
Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
ASHP allows you to grow in new ways through learning and leadership. The opportunities are endless for how to get involved and create new connections and networks.
