Helping people runs in the family for Sara J. White, R.Ph., M.S., FASHP. “My mother was an Army nurse during the Second World War and told me about giving this amazing investigational drug, which turned out to be penicillin,” said Sara.

Sara joined ASHP in 1965 and has held numerous leadership roles over the years, including serving as Chair of the Women in Pharmacy Leadership Steering Committee and as Chair of the House of Delegates. She is also the recipient of the 2006 Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award.

Sara’s most treasured ASHP memory was being elected the 1996-1997 President of ASHP after losing two prior elections. “Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with so many ASHP members and staff, many of whom have become personal friends as well as colleagues,” she said.

Though she still remains active in ASHP, Sara is now retired, having previously served as the Associate Director of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1972-1992 and as the Stanford Hospital and Clinics Director of Pharmacy at the University of California San Francisco School of Pharmacy from 1992-2003.

“I am so proud of the close to 100 residents that I have trained and the numerous staff who have grown toward their potential as we worked together,” said Sara. “I continue to love the impact that ASHP is having on our patients, fellow pharmacists, residents, and students.”
