Why I Do What I Do

The opportunity to help others has made this a rewarding career path. I also appreciate that in this field you are continually learning, and I enjoy sharing the knowledge I gain with new technicians.

Latest Accomplishment

Implementing a Technician Professional Ladder that allows technicians to advance their training and skills in higher-level technician roles is a recent accomplishment. Through this program, our technicians can increase their responsibilities and compensation as they complete modules in various roles. Current module options include Chemotherapy Admixture Certification, Medication Reconciliation Competency, and Inventory Management. We are now planning to add an Informatics Technician module. Participants complete didactic and experiential testing with critical-thinking simulations. This has motivated our technicians to move outside of their entry-level job descriptions and advance their practice, which has elevated the pharmacy department practice. The program has provided job satisfaction with opportunities to advance, improved retention of seasoned technicians, and increased technician pride and self-esteem.

Most Memorable Experience as a Pharmacy Technician

I have worked in retail and hospital pharmacy settings, both of which have had their share of memorable experiences. I wish I had written down all the funny, heart-touching, and heart-wrenching stories that have been a part of my journey. I’ll never forget something that occurred when I was working in retail: A gentleman in his late 80s told me he could stand on his head, and he proceeded to prove it right there in the store! His ageless enthusiasm was an inspiration to stay young at heart, stay physically active, and enjoy every moment life gives us.

Why I Became Certified

I have been certified since 1995. The opportunity to be recognized as a more professional member of the pharmacy team is the reason I was so excited for technicians to be able to pursue national certification.

My Passion Outside of Work

My passions include my faith in God, my family, and my fur babies (3 dogs and 5 cats!). My favorite activities include camping, kayaking, and reading.

Latest Book Read

It’s not unusual for me to have several books going at once. Currently I am reading The Story (faith); The Shadow of the Wind (fiction); and Spanish for Dummies and Daring Greatly (self-improvement).

Advice to Up-and-Coming Technicians

Remember how important your role is in pharmacy operations. Take every opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge. Treat your patients or customers as you would want your family to be treated. Don’t be afraid to admit mistakes and learn from those experiences.
