Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician

Unity Point Health

Cedar Falls, IA

Why I do what I do:
I do what I do so that I am able to help patients at both hospital and retail settings have a good healthy development, while trying to reduce their prescription costs (i.e.: applying a discount card for cash paying customers). For my littlest patients, if it is unlikely they will take their oral medication, I ask the pharmacist if a flavoring (we use FLAVORx) would be appropriate to add to help increase the odds of my little patient finishing their medication course.

Latest Accomplishment:
Two accomplishments occurred simultaneously in the month of March 2021. 1) Being featured in Iowa Pharmacy Association's The Journal Magazine for being the first Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician Credential from PTCB in Iowa, and 2) being selected as Care Force Captain of the month for March by FLAVORx.

Most Memorable Experience as a Pharmacy Technician:
My most memorable experience is from when a guest needed her medication, but was unable to find a ride to my retail location. So, after discussing it with my manager, I took it to her on my way home from work. The smile that came across her face when she saw she would have her necessary night medication was priceless. She thanked me several times over, told me to be safe going home and that my reward would be awaiting me in Heaven.

Why I Became Certified (if applicable):
 It is required my state.

My Passion Outside of Work:
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, roller skating, and riding my bike.

Advice to Up-and-Coming Technicians:
Ask as many questions as you can. Start studying for the Certification Exam as soon as possible, even if it is for only a few minutes a day.
