How and why I became interested in being appointed to the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee

My interest in joining the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee developed throughout my time as President of my SSHP chapter at Sullivan. The more events and meetings I planned and participated in, the more I knew health-systems pharmacy was the career path I wanted to follow. Involvement with ASHP at the national level is an excellent way to stay at the forefront of pharmacy practice, and the opportunities they provide to students are unmatched. Pharmacy is a profession of leadership and service, so as a student I knew working with ASHP was a great way to get involved early. As the dynamic nature of the healthcare field will always require strong and innovative leaders, the future of pharmacy depends on developing these leaders throughout their education. I became interested in the PSF Executive Committee because I want to lead and engage in this process with ASHP and to encourage others to do the same.

How being a member of ASHP has assisted in my personal and professional development

ASHP has had a significant influence on my personal and professional development. Collaboration between my SSHP chapter, our state affiliate, and ASHP made for an array of professional opportunities and exposure to pharmacy leadership. One example of this is the ASHP Student Society Development Grant awarded to Sullivan this past year. The grant application process allowed me to take a more in-depth look at how I could contribute to improving upon the past successes of our SSHP and really strengthened the professional relationship with our state affiliate as we worked together to meet our goals. Another strong influence in my professional development has been the incredible faculty at my College of Pharmacy. As leaders dedicated to advancing pharmacy practice, they are very encouraging of professional involvement; the more I took their advice and attended various meetings and conferences, the more I saw how beneficial the networking among students and practitioners can be. Another of ASHP’s benefits is its presence at all levels of pharmacy. Programs such as the CV Review and Clinical Skills Competition have been of great benefit to me both personally and professionally. The updates and awareness of the latest resources and benefits of ASHP provided to colleges by the Student Forum have also been instrumental in allowing SSHP chapters across the country to stay up-to-date; I look forward to joining the Student Forum as I continue to grow both personally and professionally.

Goals for the year as a PSFEC Member

The PSFEC serves as the voice of pharmacy students across the nation and has an incredible opportunity in its advisory capacity to the ASHP board of directors. I hope to represent the interests of my fellow students and assist ASHP in shaping the future of pharmacy practice. Students are the future of the profession, and as such it is important that we contribute to the discussion and strengthen the relationship between ASHP and its local SSHP chapters. I will work closely with my fellow PSFEC members to further expand the already impressive array of member services and benefits of the forum and to promote student engagement in pharmacy leadership.
