Leadership Skills and Professional Goals
What qualities make you an outstanding leader?
Leadership is hard to define as it means different things to different people. In my opinion, the core of leadership is to influence, assist and guide others to achieve goals that will ultimately fulfill a vision. A leader has a vision and the passion to make it come to life. Certain qualities that make me an outstanding leader include having self-awareness, commitment, and motivation while also being capable of successfully working with others.
How did you develop your leadership skills?
I developed my leadership skills by stepping outside of my comfort zone and becoming involved in various pharmacy organizations. It was not always easy to run for executive board positions, and quite frankly it was intimidating. I never thought that I would be giving a speech in front of hundreds of other pharmacy students. However, I had a vision to expand international pharmacy opportunities and wanted to make that vision a reality. After my summer internship at a pharmacy in Bosnia, I realized how many fascinating differences there were in regards to pharmacy practice. I felt that all students should have the opportunity to experience them as well. After getting elected to the executive board, I was committed to seeking out international opportunities. After many months of searching, planning, and executing events, I was able to help my colleagues participate in a medical mission trip to Peru, experience pharmacy practice in the Czech Republic, and share our own pharmacy experiences with a foreign exchange student from Germany. I found that the best way to develop my skills was to take risks, have courage and follow my aspirations.
How do you continue to cultivate your leadership skills?
I continue to cultivate my leadership skills by taking on new situations in order to further develop my abilities. For example, this past summer I was chosen as a Veterans Affairs Learning Opportunities Residency (VALOR) program clinical pharmacy intern. Since it was my first time participating in a clinical setting, I was excited to apply my didactic knowledge to clinical practice and understand how my leadership skills would help manage patients’ disease states. After being confident with my leadership skills in various pharmacy organizations throughout campus, I thought that I would have to completely change my approach in the clinical setting. To my surprise, I used and fostered the skills that I have already developed in order to help patients with chronic disease states such as diabetes, atrial fibrillation and heart failure. I took on the responsibility to assist patients in becoming more aware and involved in their disease state management. I ultimately realized the impact that I have made by encouraging and inspiring patients to make a difference.
What are your short term professional goals?
My short-term professional goals are to graduate pharmacy school and complete an ambulatory care residency. I am passionate about helping patients, especially veterans, by providing the best patient care possible.
What are your long-term professional goals?
It was remarkable serving those who have served our country during my VALOR internship. The respect that I have for our veterans is immeasurable. My long-term professional goal is become an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist within the Veterans Affairs. Along with helping manage veterans’ chronic disease states, my goal is to continue staying involved in pharmacy organizations, such as ASHP. Being a part of the Manager Development and Leadership Development Section Advisory Groups, I have realized how much more of an impact that I can make in helping other pharmacists around the nation and helping the profession of pharmacy grow in general.

Advice for Future Student Leaders
My biggest piece of advice to other students is to go out there and become a leader! I became a student leader on my campus by exploring opportunities within different pharmacy organizations and developing visions that I felt strongly about. Leadership is about doing the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason. Don’t be afraid to get involved because every person has unique leadership abilities that can make a positive difference. Find out what you are passionate about and motivate others to help develop that dream.
