Alexa’s Story

Alexa completed her Pharm.D. at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. After pharmacy school, she went to The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy where she completed her PGY1 in Pharmacy Practice with a focus on Ambulatory Care and a PGY2 in Ambulatory Care and Community Engagement. Alexa is currently a member of the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners’ Advisory Group on Compensation and Practice Sustainability. She is also currently participating in the ASHP Foundation Research Boot Camp.

Facility

Alexa currently practices at PrimaryOne Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with ten locations that serves as a primary care safety net health center for the residents of Franklin and Pickaway counties in Ohio. She practices in three of their clinics focusing on chronic disease management (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia), smoking cessation, and providing comprehensive medication reviews. PrimaryOne Health pharmacists, residents, and students also help educate other members of the health team through consultations, leading to more safe, appropriate and effective medication use.

Significant Projects

PrimaryOne Health pharmacists are participating in a statewide demonstration project led by The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in collaboration with, Ohio Pharmacists Association, Ohio Association of Community Health Centers, Ohio Department of Health (ODH), and all of the colleges of pharmacy in Ohio. The project was funded by a grant from the CDC through ODH to demonstrate the impact of pharmacists on chronic disease outcomes in federally qualified health centers. Through this project, pharmacists at PrimaryOne Health employ a population management approach to identify eligible patients with uncontrolled chronic disease and utilize pharmacy technicians to recruit and schedule patients for the chronic disease management services. PrimaryOne Health was recognized with a poster award at the National Association of Community Health Centers Community Health Institute in August 2015 for their work on this project.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

“When starting any new service, it is essential to understand the priorities and goals of your organization. Aligning the goals of the pharmacy department with the goals of the C-suite will allow you to secure buy-in and expand services.”

Involvement in ASHP

“ASHP is a strong pharmacy organization that is doing a lot of good work to support the growth and development of the profession. I think it is important to get involved and make sure that your voice is heard through professional organization involvement. Involvement in ASHP and other pharmacy organizations is a way of shaping the future of our profession.”
