Angela’s Story

A northeast Ohio native, Angela returned home to study pharmacy at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) upon earning her B.S. in Chemistry at Bowling Green State University. She wanted to pursue a profession that would allow her to better serve those around her. As a student pharmacist, she quickly became interested in learning all she could to care for patients and advance the profession of pharmacy. Angela is currently pursuing a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and looks forward to a career in health-system pharmacy and academia, with a particular focus on ambulatory care.

As a student pharmacist, Angela served as NEOMED’s ASHP liaison and SSHP president, as well as a member of Advisory Groups for both the Pharmacy Student Forum and the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners. She was also involved in her state affiliate, the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists (OSHP). Currently, she is a member of the ASHP New Practitioners Forum Membership and Outreach Advisory Group.

Facility

St. Vincent Indianapolis is a major tertiary and quaternary regional referral hospital and the centerpiece of St. Vincent Health—providing superior service in The Spirit of Caring to people across Indiana. Inpatient pharmacies support distributive and clinical pharmacy services provided by clinical pharmacist, clinical specialists, and pharmacy technicians. The inpatient pharmacies provide 24 hour-service to more than 500 inpatient beds and provide decentralized unit pharmacist coverage.

Becoming Involved in ASHP

“What we do as pharmacists is important for our patients, and it is equally important to work to advance our profession. If we are not willing to show others what we are capable of, how can we expect other professions to look to us with renewed perspective? For these reasons, I have actively pursued opportunities to get involved in professional organizations a student pharmacist and now as a new practitioner.”

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

“Take advantage of every opportunity. It can be easy to talk yourself out of new experiences or think you’re not qualified, especially as a student pharmacist, but in reality everyone has to start out by diving in somewhere. You never know what will come of a specific experience until you try it!”

Value of ASHP

“ASHP provides a wealth of resources as well as incredible opportunities to connect with pharmacists and student pharmacists all over the country. This organization allows for collaboration, professional development, and ample membership engagement for student pharmacists and pharmacists alike. In fact, ASHP and its state affiliates do such a great job of providing opportunities for involvement that student pharmacists at any level in their curriculum can actively contribute to advancing their profession.”

“ASHP serves our profession in many ways, moving us forward and preventing stagnation. It connects us with one another, unites our voice, and, most importantly, inspires us to continue working to improve our profession.”
