His Story

Dr. Wong received his Pharm.D. from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. He went on to complete a PGY-1 residency at the Washington, D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center (DC VAMC) in Washington, D.C. Dr. Wong then went onto work for Kaiser Permanente where he gained advanced clinical experience and a wealth of knowledge on CMS and NCQA quality metrics. After almost 4 years of experience at Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Wong returned to the DC VAMC.

Describe the facility where you work (eg. Is it a teaching hospital? Health Center?

Washington, D.C. Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a teaching hospital with inpatient and outpatient services. Dr. Wong works in the outpatient setting as a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist (CPS) in Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT). Dr. Wong works with various chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, COPD, asthma, CHF, etc. Dr. Wong has a broad scope of practice and is able to initiate, change, discontinue medications/supplies, order/interpret labs, and consult other specialty services. Dr. Wong works closely with the primary care team to improve quality measures and patient satisfaction and reduce primary care physician burnout, polypharmacy, and hospital readmission.

Recent Significant Projects

Dr. Wong has assisted in the development of a clinical pharmacy technician position to increase clinic utilization for PACT CPS's. Dr. Wong is also the co-lead of the educational subgroup of the national Veterans Affairs PACT Subject Matter Expert group to expand clinical knowledge VA wide.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Dr. Wong currently is the Vice-Chair of the Ambulatory Care SAG on Clinical Practice Advancement. Dr. Wong also been apart of various FAQ's and webinars through ASHP. Dr. Wong is also the ASHP State Delegate for the Washington, D.C. Metro Area.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

Dr. Wong has been involved since P1 year of pharmacy school. He has had a passion for advancing clinical practice from the beginning of his pharmacy career. He believes that his involvement with ASHP is vital to ensure that pharmacist practitioner/providers' voices are heard and understood.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

Always listen to the patient. Getting a good history (from a patient) is just as important as evidence based practice.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

Dr. Wong believes that ASHP has been invaluable to his career. It has allowed him to network among other pharmacist practitioners and he has leaned on them for support. He has been able to develop meaningful professional connections through ASHP.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP is at the forefront of ensuring clinical pharmacy practice continues. The organization advocates for advanced clinical practice and for the ability of the pharmacist to bill for services.
