Shane Madsen

Shane's Story

Dr. Madsen received his Pharm.D. from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 2002. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Franciscan Health System in Tacoma, Washington. He is also a graduate of the ASHP Foundation's Pharmacy Leadership Academy. He completed specialized training in quality and process improvement in the Allina Health Advanced Training Program. He has worked in mental health, acute care clinical leadership, and ambulatory care. As part of the UIHC Specialty Pharmacy, Dr. Madsen currently practices primarily in the rheumatology clinic and also is starting specialty pharmacy services in the pulmonology clinic. He was recently granted a secondary appointment in the Carver College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology. Dr. Madsen is currently a member of the Clinical Practice Advancement SAG within the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners.

The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is an academic health system which serves as a regional referral center for Iowa and the Midwest. It includes a 730-bed tertiary care hospital and the ambulatory care clinics had 935,000 clinic visits in 2015. It has been a US News "Best Hospital" for 25 consecutive years and is the Forbes Magazine's #1 employer in the health care industry and #7 amongst all employers.

Recent Significant Projects

Dr. Madsen developed standardized baseline screening parameters for specialty medications for the rheumatology clinic and is leading a quality improvement project for the clinic to improve clinical screening for these medications. He is working with an inter-professional team to improve the safety of prescription narcotics in the rheumatology clinic through the development of a structured program for patients receiving narcotic medications. Dr. Madsen was also the co-clinical lead for the Specialty Pharmacy's URAC accreditation survey.

Becoming Involved in ASHP

Dr. Madsen became involved in ASHP to network with pharmacy professionals, access high level education, and to ensure he was part of building the practice of pharmacy for the future.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

"For pharmacists new to specialty pharmacy, I would advise them to ask a lot of questions and dig into the literature to validate what you hear. You should get engaged with the medical staff and their learning model to build relationships, learn the foundational medicine, demonstrate your commitment to the team, and demonstrate your medication expertise."
