PharmD, BCACP

Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist

Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis

Indianapolis, IN

Biographical information

After an initial education in music performance, Dr. Place received her PharmD from Butler University in 2000. She then worked for a health system in east-central Indiana as a community pharmacist, providing patient-centered dispensing, lipid and asthma management in collaborative practice clinics, and medication therapy management. She then transitioned to opening an independent community pharmacy in Indiana. Her love of interprofessional education later led her to accept a role as a clinical pharmacist in a medical residency clinic, where she currently practices while still maintaining a role in the community pharmacy as well.

Current employment, practice, and academic responsibilities:

In her current role, Dr. Place is part of the faculty of the Ascension St. Vincent Internal Medicine medical residency, and is the program director for the institution's Ambulatory Care PGY-2 and Community-based PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs. She works with the physicians to provide interdisciplinary care in the outpatient clinic and is the lead for the outpatient medication safety efforts at the clinic. She also provides patient-centered dispensing, medication management services, and consulting services through her community pharmacy practice.

Significant Projects and Accomplishments in Community Pharmacy:

Currently, Dr. Place is working to improve the integration of community pharmacy team members at her institution into the medication management and population health initiatives throughout the organization's primary care network. In addition, she is working with the community-based pharmacy residents to improve the safety and efficiency of patient care transitions.

Professional Engagement: Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners

Dr. Place became more active in ASHP when she started the Ascension St. Vincent Community-based pharmacy residency program. She has continued to engage in residency education, serving as a practitioner surveyor with the accreditation team. This led to connections with the educational and community pharmacy components of ASHP. She recently presented an education session at the 2022 summer meeting, and serves on the Executive Committee for the Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners.

ASHP & Community Pharmacy:

ASHP's Section of Community Pharmacy Practitioners is a valuable resource for clinical and patient care education and networking and advocacy for the community pharmacy profession to a broader audience. In addition, because ASHP is an organization that involves pharmacists practicing in many different care settings, it offers the ability for community pharmacy practitioners to collaborate and connect with their more inpatient-focused counterparts. This team-based approach enables the community practitioner to build their practice with insight and learning from pharmacists practicing in other settings. The focus on patients across the care continuum is incredibly valuable and will help community pharmacy practice to continue to grow.

Professional Advice:

Community practice is a wonderful opportunity to develop long-lasting patient relationships while also utilizing all of the important clinical knowledge that pharmacist have about medication management and therapeutics. It can be easy to get lost in the day-to-day workflow but remembering that we are there to serve as patient advocates can help to refocus us on what's really important. Community pharmacists are perfectly situated to be the health care professionals that pull together patient care information from specialists, primary care providers, and other sources to ensure that our patients receive high quality, safe, and effective medication management.
