Jennifer Pauley

Her Story

Dr. Pauley received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (1995) and Doctor of Pharmacy (1997) degrees from The Ohio State University. She then completed a Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Residency at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. After completing her residency, she started working as a clinical pharmacist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. She has worked at St. Jude for almost 21 years and is currently in the role of Clinical Coordinator. Jennifer's interests include acute leukemias, education, and preceptor development. In addition, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Pauley currently serves on the Pediatric Work Group for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. She previously served on the SAG On Preceptor Skills Development. She also routinely reviews CVs. She is currently member of both the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists and Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners.

Overview of Facility/Health System

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee is one of the world's premier pediatric cancer research centers. Its mission is to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. St. Jude treats about 8,500 patients each year with 69 beds in operation. The Pharmaceutical Department is both a clinical and academic department within the institution working to integrate research findings into clinical care as quickly as possible.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

Pediatric oncology is a very difficult field of pharmacy to practice. I tell all my residents and new practitioners to find a mentor. I wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't have mentors who would listen & give me great advice!

Another piece of advice I tell new practitioners is to get involved in organizations. Even if you don't have a lot of time to invest right out of school or training, there is something you can contribute and you get so much more back.

She joined ASHP as a student wanting to pursue residency training.  While on a student rotation, she was able to work with a clinical pharmacist that practices pharmacy as she envisioned.  It was through his mentorship that she decided to pursue her Pharm.D. and residency training.

Value of ASHP

ASHP brings so much value to the profession. The organization provides so many resources including education (both in person at meetings and through the website), networking, and advocacy. As the RPD for our oncology residency program, I think one of the biggest values that ASHP offers is setting the standards and accrediting residency programs.
