Dr. Jordan Burdine received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy (TTUHSC-SOP) in 2015. She went on to complete a PGY1 pharmacy residency at West Virginia University Medicine, followed by a PGY2 pediatrics residency at TTUHSC-SOP. She is a Clinical Pharmacy Practice Specialist in Pediatrics and Neonatology at UTMB Health in Galveston, Texas.

Since starting at UTMB in 2017, Dr. Burdine has worked as part of the neonatal interdisciplinary team where she rounds and provides direct patient care in the Level IV NICU. In her role as a Clinical Practice Specialist, she precepts pharmacy students and residents, as well as provides informal and didactic education to physicians, advance practice providers and nurses.

UTMB Health is a large academic medical center that provides both adult and pediatric care.

Significant Projects:
Dr. Burdine leads many initiatives for in the development of institutional guidelines and protocols to standardize and optimize pediatric and neonatal drug therapy and patient care, as well as works collaboratively on many interdisciplinary and multisite research projects withing UTMB Department of Pediatrics and Department of Pharmacy. Recently she has been involved in a multi-site clinical trial evaluating the use of vitamin D in pre-term neonates and several research projects evaluating the impact of mixed lipid emulsions on the development of parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease. Additionally, Dr. Burdine has been involved in many quality improvement initiatives including implementation of BPAs to reduce time to vaccine administration in the NICU and optimizing vitamin and iron supplementation upon discharge.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area:
Use every experience as a learning opportunity to continue to grow into a stronger practitioner and continue to utilize your mentors to help guide you as you transition from a learner to a practicing pharmacist. The world of NICU can have so many grey areas, so reaching out to those who have seen practices change over the years can provide great insight into why we practice the way we do. Also remember that you can learn as much from your team as they can learn from you. Invest time in learning why your prescribers and nurses practice the way they do and understanding the rationale behind their decisions. Those key clinical pearls will elevate your practice!

Why did you become involved in ASHP?
I became involved as a student when I was elected to serves as my SSHP chapter president. As a P3, I was selected to attend Policy Week in Bethesda and serve of the Commission of Affiliate Relations. During that experience, I was exposed directly to the interworking's of the organization. That experience cultivated a deep desire to continue to serve ASHP and the profession of pharmacy.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
Working with a larger team to achieve a goal for the greater good of the profession.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
Gives individuals a collective voice to support their profession on a larger scale.
