Meghan’s Story

Meghan Groth attended pharmacy school at University at Buffalo, the State University of New York. After graduation, she worked as a hospital pharmacist for Kaleida Health in Buffalo, NY. Dr. Groth completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency and PGY2 Critical Care residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Groth originally became involved with ASHP as a pharmacy student to gain more exposure to the world of hospital pharmacy. She has chosen to remain involved because of the ability to connect with others in the profession. She has been a member of ASHP since she first encountered the organization in pharmacy school. Recently, Dr. Groth has become involved as a member of the Section Advisory Group for Emergency Care in the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists.

Facility

Fletcher Allen Health Care is a rural academic medical center. The Emergency Department has approximately 60,000 visits per year.

Significant Projects

Dr. Groth is currently a guest contributor to the EM PharmD blog, which has been developed by Craig Cocchio, Pharm.D. and Nadia Awad, Pharm.D. to discuss topics in Emergency Medicine from the perspective of a pharmacist. The authors are supporters of the FOAM (free open access medical education) movement, and are trying to ensure that pharmacists have a voice in the realm where social media meets medicine. She has also recently appeared on the Skeptic’s Guide to Emergency Medicine, a podcast hosted by emergency medicine physician Dr. Ken Milne.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

“It’s important to have awareness of the resources that are available to you as a new practitioner. Networking with others in your position and organizations like ASHP have tons of resources to help get you on your feet (for example, ASHP’s Section Advisory Group on Emergency Care has resources accessible through their website).”

ASHP’s Value to Members

“ASHP is a really powerful organization to be involved with. The size of the organization allows you to connect with health systems/hospital pharmacists from a huge variety of practice areas within the profession.”

“The large number of pharmacists involved with ASHP give it the power to advocate for its members.”
