Her Story

Mary Nolan, PharmD, received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in West Lafayette, Indiana. She went on to complete her PGY1 residency at Community Healthcare System in Munster, Indiana, followed by an Academic and Ambulatory Care Fellowship at Purdue University. She currently works as the Clinical Pharmacy Manager and Residency Program Director at Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana. She also precepts IPPE and APPE students from multiple colleges of pharmacy in the region.

Describe the facility where you work (eg. Is it a teaching hospital? Health Center? 

Community Hospital, Northwest Indiana’s largest hospital with 454 beds, specializes in advanced cancer care, cardiology, neurosciences, mother-baby care and orthopedic treatments. The hospital treats complex stroke with the elite designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center serving all of northern Indiana. In addition, Community Hospital boasts a Level III NICU and robust outpatient services.

Recent Significant Projects

Mary has worked to advance formulary initiatives and policy standardization across the facilities within Community Healthcare System. This includes implementing a system-wide procedure for inpatient chemotherapy utilization review and approval, and implementing changes to the current Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Mary is involved in the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners and is a member of the Educational Steering Committee.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

Mary became involved in ASHP initially as a student to connect with residency programs. Mary found continued involvement in ASHP beneficial and, throughout her career, she has participated in multiple ASHP Midyear conferences. She has also participated in the ASHP Connect community, seeking and sharing information with other pharmacists.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

Always take the time to learn new things. Never discount or shy away from an opportunity to learn from someone, since one never knows how other industries or practices can impact your own.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP is very helpful to participate in, as you get to collaborate with other institutions and have a structured format in which to share best practices, experiences, problems, and solutions within the healthcare profession.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP is an important advocate for professional development and clinical learning for pharmacists at any point in their education or career. ASHP ensures that there is a central and reliable source of information for pharmacists and students. ASHP also helps to ensure that the next generation of pharmacists is well trained and supported, from student to resident to practitioner.
