Associate Professor Pharmacy Practice

Belmont University

About my pharmacy practice journey, education, and key accompishments:

Dr. Amy Henneman received her Pharm.D. degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBAU). She then went on to complete her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. After completing residency, Dr. Henneman returned to PBAU as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice where she served as residency program director (RPD) for their PGY1 program and founding director of their PGY2 ambulatory care program.

Current employment, practice, and academic responsibilities:

In 2020 Dr. Henneman transitioned to Belmont University in Nashville, TN as an Associate Professor Pharmacy Practice. Her current practice is at the Veteran's Affairs Tennessee Valley Healthcare where she practices and precepts students within the primary care clinics. On campus, she teaches in case based and skills assessment courses for third year students as well as an ambulatory care elective.

Significant projects and accomplishments:

Most recently I participated in an assessment of pharmacy students perceived preparedness to address vaccine hesitancy and refusal based on currently provided immunization education. Given the current and recent climate around vaccination this provided valuable insight into opportunities for us to help better prepare students to address these issues as graduates. I'm currently planning my spring ambulatory care elective and working on a small project regarding integration of wellness and resiliency within the curriculum.

What has been your ASHP journey?

I have been involved with ASHP since beginning my residency. I have been active within the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners, serving for many years on the Educational Steering Committee for that group. As an RPD I have attended and participated in many of the trainings and conferences provided by ASHP. These events allowed me to develop successful programs and helped me prepare well for accreditation. I had a great mentor early in my career who encouraged me to get involved beyond just membership. As educators we are often that connecting voice between the present and future of pharmacy. I believe we have a strong role in being a voice and visionary for the next generation of pharmacist. It is this strong passion that led me to become involved with the Section of Pharmacy Educators specifically. This year I will be serving as Vice Chair of the Development of Post-Graduate Education and Learning Experiences (PELE) SAG within the section.

Share your thoughts on ASHP’s value as a professional organization in contributing to the education of the pharmacy workforce? What do you think are some key success, resources, and opportunities?

ASHP is a voice for our profession and it is our involvement that helps guide the advocacy of the organization for pharmacy practice. ASHP provides a variety of high quality training and continuing education opportunities to assist individuals and groups in reaching their goals and moving towards new opportunities. The work ASHP has done around residency training has helped standardize and expand those opportunities pushing clinical pharmacy practice further. The resources that ASHP offers in the form of both formal activities, but also within their Connect communities, have been particularly impactful for me. I feel I have access to some of the best and brightest through the ASHP Connect community and always learn so much when I read through those posts.

What advice would you provide for individuals new to your area of practice?

As a new clinical faculty member I would encourage you to get involved and network with other pharmacy educators. As with any area of pharmacy, there are opportunities and challenges within the area of pharmacy education that are going to be unique. Connecting with those who have come before you is an invaluable resource in helping you establish your footing and grow your career.
