Her Story

Dr. Roberts grew up in the Cleveland area, attended Ohio University for her BS degree and received her Pharm.D. degree from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. She completed a 2 year combined HSPAL program at The University of North Carolina Medical Center during which she also obtained a master’s degree from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She is published in the areas of sterile compounding and IV workflow systems and has dual board certification in pharmacotherapy and sterile compounding. She is passionate about technician education and development and safety within the medication use process.

She is the Director of Pharmacy for Health-system oncology operations.  Patty serves as an APPE preceptor, residency preceptor and is the PGY2 coordinator for a new HSPAL program at UH.

Facility

University Hospitals' Seidman Cancer Center (UH SCC) is a founding member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, a NCI designated comprehensive cancer center. UH SCC is comprised of a free-standing cancer hospital with an infusion center and 17 additional locations providing cancer care to the patients of northeast Ohio. Annually, the UH SCC has over 15,000 inpatient discharges and over 250,000 ambulatory visits.

Recent Significant Projects

Recently, Patty has supported the opening two new ambulatory infusion locations. She has facilitated the conversion of the type of closed-system transfer device the health-system utilizes. She is currently developing the role of clinical pharmacy specialists within the ambulatory infusion and clinic setting at UH SCC. Patty also recently presented an educational session at ASHP midyear and looks forward to the expected publication of a letter to the editor she is the corresponding author on in AJHP. 

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Patty is currently the vice-chair for the Section Advisory Group (SAG) for New and Emerging Leaders within the Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders. This is her third year on this SAG.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

Dr. Roberts became involved in ASHP when she was a second year pharmacy student and was able to present a poster at ASHP midyear. Since this experience she continues to stay involved due to the consistent opportunities to develop her career that ASHP has offered.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area 

Patty suggests that all new leaders find their balance of continuously challenging themselves to be better for their team and the patients, but also not to be too hard on themselves as they grow and learn along the way. 

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP is the centering point for those in health-system pharmacy practice. It serves to represent the best interests of those in the profession of pharmacy, which includes pharmacists and technicians.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP is valuable to the profession of pharmacy because it helps set the course of pharmacy practice advancement.
