Overview of Facility/Health System

UNC Medical Center is a public, academic medical center operated by and for the people of North Carolina. The Medical Center’s mission is to provide high quality patient care, educate health care professionals, advance research and provide community service. Patients from all 100 North Carolina counties and throughout the Southeast are treated at the greater than 800-bed facility - more than 37,000 each year. These patients are cared for by 7,100 employees. UNC Medical Center includes North Carolina Cancer Hospital, North Carolina Children's Hospital, North Carolina Memorial Hospital, North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital, and North Carolina Women's Hospital. UNC Medical Center is the flagship hospital of UNC Health Care, a not-for-profit integrated health care system.

Significant Projects

Dr. Amerine led the implementation of a gravimetric-based technology-assisted workflow system at UNC. The system is live in the primary hazardous and non-hazardous preparation areas and two off-site infusion centers with plans to expand the system to other off-site infusion centers in the coming year. This system has increased the accuracy of preparations, reduced the turnaround time to prepare and check, and improved staff satisfaction.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

"Immerse yourself into the daily operations of your practice area. Knowing your area operations, staff, and why the processes exist will help you to move practice changes forward where necessary. As you make practice changes, publish them! Likely the changes you made to a process will help other institutions challenged with the same process. Publishing also opens up opportunities for you, your staff, and organization as you become recognized for being a leader in the field."

Initial Involvement in ASHP

"ASHP offers a comprehensive network and membership opportunities for all facets of pharmacists practicing in health-systems. ASHP involves its members in all policies, statements, and positions, so you can truly make an impact in practice by being an engaged member."

Value of ASHP

"ASHP is a recognized and trusted leader in healthcare. If you want an organization that listens to and involves its members so that they impact the profession, ASHP is the organization to join."

"ASHP is a trusted leader within the profession as evident through spearheading changes to practice such as provider status and drug shortages. The continued emphasis on residency training that ASHP leads enables the profession to elevate practice as the healthcare landscape evolves."
