Stephen’s Story

Stephen J. Davis is a Pharmacy Operations Manager and Residency Program Director of the MS/PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Stephen received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Auburn University’s Harrison School of Pharmacy. He then completed a MS/PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. Stephen served on ASHP’s New Practitioner Leadership and Career Development Advisory Group and has been an active member on the Section Advisory Group for Manager Development through ASHP’s Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers. Stephen is also active at the state level as he currently serves as the chair of TSHP’s Editorial Advisory Board, Treasurer for GCSHP, and is an active member of TSHP’s Pharmacy Management Section Executive Committee. Stephen most recently received TSHP’s 2015 Pharmacy Leadership Award for demonstrating leadership and vision in advancing the practice and profession and improving patient care. He has also authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles.

Facility

Texas Children’s Hospital is a 639 bed not-for-profit pediatric hospital located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Texas Children’s Hospital is the largest children’s hospital in the United States and is affiliated with the Baylor College of Medicine as that institution’s primary pediatric training site. Texas Children’s Hospital has expanded in order to respond to the growing need for expert pediatric health care with the opening of Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus (74 beds) and a planned opening of Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands in 2017 (30 acute beds, with plans to expand up to 200 beds). Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women (99 beds) provides women, mothers and babies with a full continuum of high-quality, expert health care. Texas Children’s also has over 50 pediatric health care clinics located throughout the greater Houston area.

Significant Projects

Recently, Stephen has been involved in the implementation of DoseEdge Pharmacy Workflow Manager for the Main Campus Central Pharmacy and Pavilion for Women Pharmacy areas. He will be involved in implementing DoseEdge Pharmacy Workflow Manager to the additional pharmacy satellites. Stephen has been involved in changes to his pharmacy practice model and medication distribution model. He will also be involved in the implementation of medication carousels at Texas Children’s Hospital.

As leaders, we are responsible for ensuring that we are leading our departments to provide quality patient care through optimal medication use and safety.” Initial Involvement in ASHP “During my PGY1 year of the combined MS/PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, I noticed that my co-residents, notable preceptors, residency coordinator, and residency program director were all involved in ASHP. They encouraged me to get involved as soon as the opportunity presented itself. They allowed me to sit on advisory group and section phone calls with them so that I could understand the impact that each committee and council had on the profession. I also had the opportunity to travel to ASHP’s headquarters during my residency. I then waited for the next opportunity to get involved in ASHP as a new practitioner. I have been an active member ever since.”
