Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

“Always remember that we are here for the patients! Every decision that we make will impact patients in some form or fashion. As leaders, we are responsible for ensuring that we are leading our departments to provide quality patient care through optimal medication use and safety.” Initial Involvement in ASHP “During my PGY1 year of the combined MS/PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, I noticed that my co-residents, notable preceptors, residency coordinator, and residency program director were all involved in ASHP. They encouraged me to get involved as soon as the opportunity presented itself. They allowed me to sit on advisory group and section phone calls with them so that I could understand the impact that each committee and council had on the profession. I also had the opportunity to travel to ASHP’s headquarters during my residency. I then waited for the next opportunity to get involved in ASHP as a new practitioner. I have been an active member ever since.”

ASHP’s Value to Members

“ASHP has been very valuable for me personally and professionally. Personally my involvement in ASHP has allowed me to establish friendships through the vast network that comes with being a part of ASHP. Professionally ASHP has given me the opportunity to grow and develop my leadership skills. There are numerous opportunities for involvement, networking, clinical, leadership, and professional development as a member of ASHP. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without my involvement in ASHP.” “ASHP is very valuable for the profession in so many ways. ASHP is of great value through the advocacy efforts that occur on behalf of all health system pharmacists. ASHP is also our one stop shop for backorder management, news impacting our profession, clinical and leadership development, and valuable literature searches through AJHP. The website itself has so many resources for health system pharmacists. I am amazed at how ASHP works tirelessly to put pharmacists in the best position to provide patient care.”
