Cedarville University School of Pharmacy
About Our Professional Development Project
Our SSHP coordinated and hosted an organ donation awareness drive. We used multiple avenues to increase community participation in organ and tissue donation as well as raise awareness and debunk misconceptions that currently exist.
What Leadership Agenda Item Did the Project Support?
Increase the influence of pharmacy leaders in hospitals and health systems.
Where and When Was the Project Held?
Our event was held on Cedarville’s Campus and at OSHP’s Residency showcase during April 2013 and October 2013.
How Many Patients Were Impacted or Exposed to Your Project?
We spoke with over 350 people and signed up 20+ individuals to become new organ donors.
Describe Your Collaboration with Your State Health-System Pharmacy Organization to Implement This Project.
Bob Parsons was our OSHP contact and helped make our time at the OSHP residency showcase a success.
Will Your SSHP Repeat This Project Next Year? If So, What Aspects Will You Keep the Same? Change?
This will be an annual project. We have adjusted our locations both on campus and at next year’s residency showcase so that we will be able to speak with more people.
Advice for Other SSHPs
Talk with your state affiliated Donate Life/Life Connection group. These individuals know how to get supplies, answer tough questions, and help set up a successful drive. Also don’t be afraid to reach out to people. Making the extra effort to show we were passionate about organ donation made people at least offer a couple minutes of their time to listen to what we had to say. If you aren’t showing interest in your project, why should the people you are trying to reach be interested?
Future Plans and Goals
Our goal for the next year is to grow our organization and become more involved on both the state and national levels. We have only been an organization for 2 years and our members are making great headway in the areas of networking, joining state divisions, and applying for positions on ASHP’s student advisory committees.
