About Our Professional Development Project

Members of our student society helped pharmacy technician students become better prepared for the national pharmacy technician certification exam (PTCE). Pharmacy students created and presented a study guide and practice exam covering information on Sterile/Non-sterile Compounding, Pharmacology and Brand/Generic, Law/Inventory/Billing, and Calculations.

What ASHP Strategic Plan Item Did the Project Support?

The project supported the following ASHP Strategic Plan items:

  • Influence the development and implementation of health information technologies and standards that help improve patient-care;
  • Foster optimal models for team-based, patient-centered care that include pharmacists as the experts in medication therapy management;
  • Influence the development and implementation of health information technologies and standards that help improve patient-care.

Where and When Was the Project Held?

The event was held April 2015 at North Dakota State College of Science.

Describe Your Collaboration with Your State Health-System Pharmacy Organization to Implement This Project.

We worked with the North Dakota State College of Science Pharmacy Technician Program.

Will Your SSHP Repeat This Project Next Year? If So, What Aspects Will You Keep the Same? Change?

Yes. We will continue to prepare a study guide, practice exam, and present it to the technician students. We also will ensure the pharmacy students presenting are second and third year students so they can accurately answer questions. In the future, we could reach out to the college and see if there is any particular section to focus on that the students feel is most challenging.

Advice for Other SSHPs

Find a place in your professional community that you can have an impact! Pharmacy technicians are the backbone of pharmacy work. By empowering them and helping them become better trained, we can more effectively use pharmacists in direct patient care. Look for Pharmacy Technician schools in your area to create a relationship with to make any project you do an annual event! It may also help to reach out to pharmacy faculty members or pharmacy coworkers for outreach event ideas — they are full of great advice!

Future Plans and Goals

We are currently establishing a monthly Journal Club that will allow students to participate in active learning and help them keep up with current changes in pharmacy. Journal Club will help students bridge the gap between education and application, and learn to evaluate facts and situations. The sessions will be held online during the summer and in person during the school year. By playing an active role in our own education, we strive to become the pharmacists that can and will make a difference by carrying out the goals in ASHP’s Strategic Plan.
