Ted Berei, PharmD., MBA, BCPS

Clinical Pharmacist, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology

University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics

Wisconsin

Reasons for selecting this career path:
I’ve always loved the heart. It clicked for me in biology, anatomy, pharmacology, and therapeutics classes and seemingly always made sense. I would also credit wonderful experiences as a fourth year pharmacy student and first year resident with solidifying cardiology as my desired specialty area. Completing a PGY2 in cardiology gave me further exposure to the pharmacist’s role in the management of advanced heart failure patients, which led to my current role at the University of Wisconsin within our cardiovascular medicine division.

Professional Interests:

  • Advanced Heart Failure
  • Cardio-Oncology
  • Clinical Outcomes  Research
  • Preceptor Development and Mentoring
  • Mechanical Circulatory Support

Interest in the NPF Executive Committee:
Over the past four years, I have had the pleasure to serve on multiple New Practitioner Forum Advisory Groups. This has given me a tremendous amount of perspective related to the role the advisory groups play within ASHP and the impact they can ultimately have on our profession. With these experiences in mind, I hope to challenge our 2018 - 2019 advisory groups to be both forward thinking and innovative so that we can better meet the needs of tomorrow’s pharmacist.

Benefits of being involved in ASHP as a New Practitioner:
By far, the greatest benefit is the ability to network with like-minded peers across the country. You end up making friends for life that you consistently turn to both professionally and personally. Furthermore, you are able to develop unique project management skills since the work completed through the advisory groups is done almost exclusively electronically amongst group members. Even better, you are able to see the fruits of your labor come to fruition when projects go from being conceptual to concrete.

Fun Fact: I play all 4 saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone) and first picked up the saxophone in 4th grade.
