Sterile Floxuridine No Longer Available

Cheryl A. Thompson

Sterile floxuridine for intra-arterial infusion, also known as FUDR, cannot be obtained from Roche Laboratories Inc. for the foreseeable future, the company announced recently.

To maintain patients' access to the drug, which is primarily used in the palliative management of gastrointestinal adenocarcinoma that has metastasized to the liver, the Food and Drug Administration has agreed to make available a limited supply of nonsterile floxuridine, Roche stated in a "Dear Doctor" letter dated Jan. 24. This supply can be accessed only through an emergency investigational new drug application.

PPD Inc., a contract research organization with headquarters in North Carolina, handles the "Roche FUDR hotline," which can be reached at 888-320-9383. The hotline's recorded message instructs callers to leave their name, telephone number, and the prescribing physician's name.
