Janssen to Discontinue Allergy Drug Hismanal

Katherine M. Bennett

Janssen Pharmaceutica is voluntarily discontinuing the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of Hismanal(astemizole) 10 mg Tablets. Hismanal is an antihistamine indicated for relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. The decision to pull the drug off the market was a result of warnings about serious side effects, declining sales, and a crowded allergy marketplace.

Patients who have been taking Hismanal for their allergy symptoms should consult with their doctors to determine an appropriate alternative treatment.
