Kienle Selected as Hospital Pharmacy Rep to JCAHO
Her appointment marks the first time a pharmacist has represented the profession on the committee that advises JCAHO about developing and refining hospital accreditation standards and scoring guidelines.
Reporting on the first PTAC meeting of her two-year term, Kienle noted four issues of importance to hospital pharmacists:
- Progress by JCAHO in defining conscious sedation,
- Need for pharmacy to verify that hospital bylaws or policies permit pharmacists to write in the medical record,
- Differences between JCAHO and the Health Care Financing Administration in their definitions of chemical restraints, and
- Maintenance of a departmental staffing plan, including responses to fluctuations.
Kienle is system director of pharmacy services at Mercy Health Partners, in Pennsylvania.
