Kienle Selected as Hospital Pharmacy Rep to JCAHO

Cheryl A. Thompson

Former ASHP board member Patricia C. Kienle, M.P.A., has been named by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as the pharmacy practitioner member of the hospital Professional and Technical Advisory Committee.

Her appointment marks the first time a pharmacist has represented the profession on the committee that advises JCAHO about developing and refining hospital accreditation standards and scoring guidelines.

Reporting on the first PTAC meeting of her two-year term, Kienle noted four issues of importance to hospital pharmacists:

  • Progress by JCAHO in defining conscious sedation,
  • Need for pharmacy to verify that hospital bylaws or policies permit pharmacists to write in the medical record,
  • Differences between JCAHO and the Health Care Financing Administration in their definitions of chemical restraints, and
  • Maintenance of a departmental staffing plan, including responses to fluctuations.

Kienle is system director of pharmacy services at Mercy Health Partners, in Pennsylvania.
