Letter to the Editor Pushes for Technician Certification

ASHP Public Relations Division

ASHP called attention to the public health risks posed by pharmacy workforce shortages in a recent letter to the editor of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

The letter responded to a three-part series that focused on the growth of pharmacy technicians and their role in dispensing medications errors and the increasing responsibility placed on pharmacy technicians. In the communication, ASHP Executive Vice President Henri R. Manasse, Jr., Ph.D., Sc.D., stated that properly trained technicians can play an important role in providing cost-effective health care in environments that feature well-defined procedures and quality control systems.

"The use of certified, appropriately supervised technicians is one of this nation's best investments in improved patient care, allowing pharmacists to counsel patients on appropriate medication use and advise physicians and other health care providers about medications," he wrote.
