Small Puncture Found in Pulmozyme Ampuls

Cheryl A. Thompson

About one of every 1,700 ampuls of Pulmozyme inhalation solution may have a small puncture, potentially causing the container to leak, Genentech Inc. announced today.

The defect in packaging of the company’s recombinant dornase alfa product, used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis, was discovered during a quality assurance inspection. Ampuls with leaks should not be used but should be returned to the company. Instructions can be obtained by calling 800-334-0290.

Pharmacists and patients can test their Pulmozyme supplies by squeezing the ampuls. “The leaks are readily identifiable,” the company stated in a press release. The company adds that it “does not foresee a disruption in the product supply.”
