ASHP Releases New Publications to Help Pharmacy Technicians Achieve Certification
The Manual for Pharmacy Technicians, updated to include more than 300 pages of comprehensive information, is a valuable reference for technicians working in all practice settings. The manual contains new chapters on pharmacologic actions of medications, drug information, ambulatory pharmacy practice, and home care pharmacy practice. The manual also features a new glossary defining important terms, new learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, and self-assessment sections to help users measure what they have learned at the chapter's end.
ASHP's second publication for technicians, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Review and Practice Exam, is designed to help technicians successfully prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. Developed in cooperation with the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists, this thorough study guide is organized to reflect the functional areas defined in PTCB's candidate handbook. Topics include pharmacy law, medication order and prescription interpretation, pharmaceutical calculations, drug distribution, and more. The book also includes a mock exam, a chart of commonly prescribed medications, and test-taking strategies.
A third resource available from ASHP is the 1998 Pharmacy Technician Training Program Directory. The directory identifies technician training programs throughout the U.S. and contains detailed program descriptions and application deadlines.
