Fraud Alert: Caller Claims to Work with ASHP, Wants List of Pharmacists

Kate Traynor

Looks like someone is fraudulently using the "ASHP" name to try to obtain pharmacists' names.

Within the past month, two hospital pharmacists in New Mexico and Tennessee have reported receiving a telephone call from someone claiming to work for ASHP and wanting a list of pharmacists who work at those facilities.

The more recent incident occurred Monday, Sept. 11. Someone calling himself "Cody Jones" contacted a hospital in New Mexico, claimed to be with ASHP, and requested that the pharmacist who answered the phone compile a list of the pharmacists and fax it to Dallas-area "Southwest Research" at 972-506-1745. The pharmacist said Jones wanted the list in order to send continuing-education materials.

ASHP is not associated with Southwest Research, Cody Jones, or any effort to compile a list of pharmacist names by contacting individual hospitals.

For some surveys of members, ASHP does use outside research firms. Participation by members is entirely voluntary.

To confirm whether a firm is legitimately conducting work for ASHP, check the news box at the ASHP home page or the weekly message from the ASHP Push News Service or call the ASHP Member and Affiliate Relations Division (301-657-3000 ext. 1344).
