ASHP, 5 Other Organizations Develop Principles of Formulary System

Kate Traynor

Seeking to guide Congress as it considers applying the concepts of a formulary system to an outpatient prescription-drug benefit for Medicare beneficiaries, ASHP and five other organizations have developed "Principles of a Sound Formulary Drug System" (PDF). ASHP distributed the document to members of Congress for use in the debate over a Medicare drug benefit and to the Society's state affiliates.  In addition to aiding Congress, the document may be useful to state governments and private health plans.

(A revised document, bearing the names of the original six organizations plus the American Medical Association and the National Business Coalition on Health, was issued in October 2000.)
